                Fynbos Retreat is the perfect getaway for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. The property is home to a remarkable diversity of fynbos including limestone, dune strandveld, sandstone fynbos, wetland, milkwood and afromontane forest. Many rare and endangered plant species have been recorded on the property. For bird lovers the surrounding hills and valleys are home to over 100 bird species. Three well marked, circular hiking trails have been laid out on the property. These are ideal for walking or trail running.

                A large dam is fed by a natural spring in the milkwood forest at the base of the limestone cliffs. The dam, which is great for swimming, has a jetty and an alternative more easy access and exit.

                The Area
                Fynbos Retreat is situated between the villages of Stanford and Gansbaai, both great tourism destinations in their own right and is surrounded by a wide variety of exciting destinations and attractions.

                Platbos Forest (www.platbos.co.za)
                "Platbos" is an Afrikaans name which can be directly translated to "flat forest or bush", a perfectly descriptive name. This unexpected gem of an indigenous forest is situated on thr road past Grootbos towards Baardscheerdersbos. It can also be approached directly from Fynbos Retreat via Flower Valley if you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Platbos Forest is one of the Overstrand´s best kept secrets. A number of beautiful trails have been laid out in the forest and visits can be arranged to explore and enjoy the unique natural ambience of Platbos.

                Gansbaai is South Africa's premier destination for diving with Great White Sharks, the experience of a lifetime. The nearby seaside town of De Kelders is the best place in the world for land-based whale watching, and in season (July - November) these amazing creatures come within touching distance of the shore! The closest swimming beach to Fynbos Retreat is Stanford's Cove between Gansbaai and De Kelders about 20 minutes drive from the accommodation.

                The quaint rural village of Stanford is also well worth visiting with cozy coffee shops, antique dealers and the beautiful Klein River which can be enjoyed on one of the local sundowner boat cruises.

                Across the bay from Fynbos Retreat lies the beautiful seaside town of Hermanus. Hermanus is also known for amazing land-based whale watching and scenic beauty. Hermanus is surrounded by majestic mountains, indigenous fynbos and spectacular natural beauty.

                Quad Adventures
                The Quad Explore Nature Trails take riders on an informative, guided quad bike nature trail in the beautiful fynbos of the Uilenkraal's Valley and hills above Gansbaai. For bookings contact Corné on 071 175 9861.

                Growing the Future organic agriculture and training project
                Situated on the road to Fynbos Retreat is the organic vegetable and training programme of Grootbos Nature Reserve (www.grootbos.com) . This project was established in 2009 in order to train unemployed women in vegetable growing and free-range animal husbandry as well as life-skills development. Much of the fresh produce used for catering at Fynbos Retreat has been grown at this project. Visitors are welcome and can purchase free range eggs, fynbos honey and fresh organically grown vegetables from the ladies at Growing the Future.                 Klein Rivier Cheese Factory
                The Klein Rivier Cheese factory is situated on the road leading from Stanford to Caledon. It is approximately 20km from Fynbos Retreat. Visitors to the farm can enjoy a delicious picnic lunch on the banks of the tranquil Klein River or in the garden. For children, there is an extensive playground to enjoy and many farm animals to see. A trip to the Klein River farm is a great outing for the whole family. Children can enjoy the petting farm and get to see chickens, ducks, foals and calves and play on some great playground equipment, while Mom and Dad taste cheese and browse around the Cheese Shop. You can also taste the mouthwatering cheeses while watching the cheese being made in the factory.

                Cape Agulhas further south is the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, as well as being the southernmost point on the continent! You can take the tar road via Stanford, Napier, Bredasdorp to Cape Agulhas or the more scenic but slower gravel/tar route via the quaint villages of Baardscheerdersbos and Elim. The Kapula candle factory and shipwreck museum in Bredasdorp are also well worth a visit.
